ibs-smart™ TEST RESULTS

If either antibody is ‘Elevated,’ the test results can be considered positive. The patient can be confidently diagnosed with IBS-D or IBS-M.

If both antibodies are ‘Not Elevated,’ the test results can be considered non-indicative of post-infectious IBS. Further testing may be required in this case.

Anti-CdtB: Elevated | Anti-Vinculin: Not Elevated

Positive for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Specificity 94% | Positive Predictive Value 96%

  • Suggests recent or past gastroenteritis.

  • Immune system has responded to CdtB toxin with antibodies.

  • Studies show that anti-CdtB predicts a disturbed microbiome has occurred after gastroenteritis.

  • The patient is at higher risk for subsequent infectious enteritis.

Anti-CdtB: Not Elevated | Anti-Vinculin: Elevated

Positive for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Specificity 91% | Positive Predictive Value 96%

  • Initial gastroenteritis may have occurred a long time ago.

  • Anti-vinculin, an autoimmune response, has developed and an altered microbiome may be seen.

  • Elevated anti-vinculin levels may indicate a more severe condition and a greater chronicity of disease. (Anti-vinculin autoimmunity usually develops 3-4 months after the infection.)

  • The patient is at higher risk for subsequent infectious enteritis.

Anti-CdtB: Elevated | Anti-Vinculin: Elevated

Positive for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

 Specificity 100% | Positive Predictive Value 100%

  • An immune response is fighting the toxin with antibodies and fueling creation of anti-vinculin.

  • A recent infection is likely, whether it is the initial infection or a subsequent one.

Anti-CdtB: Not Elevated | Anti-Vinculin: Not Elevated

Non-Indicative of Post-Infectious IBS

  • Patient could still have IBS, but it may not be post-infectious in nature.

  • Additional testing may help determine another cause for symptoms.
